Transfer ownership following the owner's death
If the registered owner of the vehicle has died and has a will, you'll need a grant of probate to transfer ownership. This allows someone to administer the deceased’s personal property.
If there's no valid will, you'll need Letters of Administration.
Probate and letters of administration
The executor or administrator must act as the seller and complete the Vehicle Registration Document (VRD1). The buyer should complete their required sections as detailed above.
Where a buyer has not been identified, the executor or administrator may transfer the vehicle into their own name if they want.
Together with the completed VRD1, the executor or administrator will need these additional documents to complete the transfer:
-
grant of probate or Letters of Administration (original or certified true copy)
-
photographic identification
There is no fee for this service.
