Parking paycards

Buying paycards

You must use paycards for public car parks and in chargeable parking areas on the street.

You can buy paycards from many places, including:

  • newsagents
  • local shops
  • supermarkets
  • post offices

Paycards can be bought individually or in books of 10.

Using paycards

You must display paycards face up on the dashboard of your vehicle so that all of the paycard areas are visible from outside the car. Overlapping paycards will result in a fine.

There are 5 sections on a paycard. You must scratch the silver coating off in each of the sections to indicate:

  • day
  • date
  • month
  • arrival time in hours
  • arrival time in minutes (to the nearest 5 minutes)

For example, if you arrive at 10.15am on Tuesday 3 February you would scratch the silver off in the following areas:

  • [TUE] in the day section
  • [3] in the date section
  • [FEB] in the month section
  • [10] on the outer ring of the clock (arrival hour)
  • [15] on the inner ring of the clock (arrival minutes)

Where to use paycards

Paycards are valid in:

  • chargeable public car parks between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday (be aware of the maximum time restrictions in public car parks. Some are all day car parks, whereas some have a maximum stay of 3 hours stay
  • 20 minute and 1 hour zones on-street in St Helier between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday
  • resident parking zones, on street visitor parking Monday to Sunday between 8am and 10pm

You do not need to use paycards on Bank Holidays or Sundays. Parking is free on these days (except in resident parking zones).

Depending on the car park or the street area you use, 1 unit can last for:

  • 20 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 2 hours

Always check the signage to see how long a paycard is valid for.

Long and short stay car parks

When are parking fines issued

You'll be issued a parking fine if:

  • any of the scratched details on your paycard are not visible, scratched incorrectly or are not scratched
  • you're using more than 1 paycard and they have different details scratched off
  • you park for longer than your scratched paycards are valid for
  • you stay longer than the maximum time restriction in a parking area

If you make a mistake when scratching your paycard, you must discard it and use another.

If you cannot scratch off the silver coating you can either mark the intended details very clearly by using a pen or make a hole. We will not accept lightly marked details.
