​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​About the Pension Plus scheme

Pension Plus is a government funded scheme to help lower-income pensioners who have reached pensionable age with the costs of:

  • dental
  • optical 
  • chiropody

The scheme is administered by Employment, Social Security and Housing.

Who is eligible for Pension Plus

You can apply for Pension Plus if:

  • you've reached pension age at the time of application
  • you either have an Jersey Old Age Pension or have Entitled residential status
  • you (and your partner) do not pay Jersey income tax
  • you (and your partner) have capital assets less than £64,000

We do not include the home you live in as part of your capital assets, but we do include:

  • other properties you own
  • savings and investments
  • pension bonds
  • other items of value such as jewellery and paintings

Optical, dental and chiropody costs and what you can claim for

On Pension Plus, you'll be entitled to the following financial support:

Optical

  • every 2 years, up to £55 towards an eye test
  • every 2 years, up to £165 towards new prescription glasses, lenses or contact lenses

Dental

  • every year, up to £55 towards dental check-up
  • every 4 years, up to £1,900 towards dental treatments or dentures​

Chiropody

  • every year, up to £165 towards the cost of chiropody treatment from a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered chiropodist

You cannot claim for missed or cancelled appointments.

What you can and cannot claim for on Pension Plus

• filings, root canals, dental implants, bridges, 

crowns and extractions

• gum treatments (provided by a dentist)
• dentures (provided by a dentist) 
• denture repairs

• dental x-rays
• mouth guards
• sedation

• cosmetic dental treatments, eg teeth whitening, cosmetic braces, dental veneers and gold teeth

• new dentures bought from a denture repair laboratory (without a prescription from a Pension Plus dentist)

• toothpaste, mouthwash and dental floss

• prescriptions and medication

• mouth cancer treatments
• missed or late appointment fees 

Chiropody or podiatry

• HCPC registered 
chiropodist or podiatrist 

• toenail problems, such as thickening, fungal or ingrown toenails

• corns, calluses and bunions

• medication
• missed or late appointment fees

Optical

• optometrist or optician 

• glasses, frames and spectacle lenses
• prescription sunglasses

• cosmetic optical items such as coloured contact lenses
• medication 
• eye surgery (including laser eye surgery)
• treatment for cataracts
• missed or late 
appointment fees
 

Depending on your circumstances, funding may be available for:

  • prescriptions and medication
  • mouth cancer treatments

How to make a claim

You must have received a confirmation letter from us to let you know that you’ve been accepted onto the scheme before you make a claim.

You no longer have to pay for your treatment upfront. 

To use Pension Plus, follow these steps: 

  1. make an appointment with your optician, dentist or chiropodist
  2. tell your practitioner that you are a Pension Plus member or tell us who your practitioners are 
  3. check how much the services will cost
  4. ask your practitioner how much available benefit you have in Pension Plus and how much you will need to pay
  5. receive your treatment
  6. your practitioner will invoice us up to your level of available benefit
  7. pay for any costs not covered by your benefit

Further details are available in your confirmation letter. You cannot claim for missed or cancelled appointments.

You must tell us if your circumstances change and you are no longer eligible for the scheme.

Claiming for treatment you've had before joining the scheme

You can't make a claim for treatment you have had before your registration has been confirmed.

Health Access Scheme

If you qualify for Pension Plus, you will be covered by the Health Access Scheme. Under the scheme most appointments with a doctor or nurse in General Practice will be charged at fixed, low fees. 

Other help for low-income pensioners

Income Support is an income-related benefit that provides financial support towards the costs of:

  • housing
  • living
  • medical needs
  • childcare

Carers also receive support.

You might also qualify for the Community Costs Bonus and Cold Weather Bonus.

If you disagree with a decision about your Pension Plus benefits

If you're a member of Pension Plus and you disagree with our decision about the payment of your benefit, you may be able to appeal this decision.

If you think a Social Security decision is wrong

Practitioners

Tell us your preferred dentist, optician and chiropodist from this list before you book an appointment. We can only pay for services from members.
