Claiming your state pension early

Reduced pension if you claim early

You can choose to take your pension at any time between your early pension age and your pension age, (calculate your early pension age and pension age below).

For each month your pension is paid early, it will be reduced by 0.58% of your pension entitlement.

For example, if your pension age is 65 and 2 months and you have a 100% entitlement to pension, but you choose to take your pension at 63, you’ll be paid approximately 85% of the standard rate pension for the rest of your life:

26 months x 0.58% = 15.08%

100% - 15.08% = 84.9%

How your state pension works

Changes to the state pension age

The age that a reduced pension can be paid will move in line with the changes to the pension age.

The changes only affect you if you were born on or after 1 January 1955.

Women who joined the Jersey Social Security scheme before January 1975 will continue to be able to claim a pension when they reach the age of 60.

Taking your pension early

Once you have decided to take your pension early, you’ll stay on the reduced rate for life. You should take this into account in planning for your future.

The following payments will also be affected:

  • an increase in a pension for a dependent wife
  • a pension for a wife if she also chooses to take an early pension based on her husband's contributions
  • a pension for a widow based on her husband’s contributions

Giving up work and receiving Income Support

You might not be able to claim Income Support if you take your pension early and you gave up work without good reason (you don't have to stop working to claim a pension).

You'll also be required to find a job if you're under pension age.

You should speak to us before making any decisions.
