Termination of Pregnancy (ToP)

Under the Termination of Pregnancy (Jersey) Law 1997, pregnancies can be terminated until the end of the 12th week of pregnancy.

If you are over 12 weeks pregnant, or have not been resident in Jersey for at least 90 days, you may need to make alternative arrangements to have your procedure performed off-Island.

Pregnancies can be terminated in 2 ways:

  1. Medical termination up until 10 weeks of pregnancy
  2. Surgical termination of pregnancy between 7 weeks and the end of the 12th week of pregnancy (12 weeks + 6 days)

The method of termination may also depend on pre-existing medical conditions. Medical termination of pregnancy is often considered safer and this is now the most common method of termination.

This will be discussed with you at the clinic.

Referrals

A referral must be made to the hospital Termination of Pregnancy Service by

  • your GP
  • Brook clinic
  • Community Contraception Service

By law you must have two consultations with a doctor before your procedure can take place. This is usually your referring doctor, and the hospital doctor.

After both consultations, you will receive an appointment for the Termination of Pregnancy Clinic in Rayner Ward Out-patients.

Clinics are usually held on Tuesday afternoons and evenings.

Our location

Rayner Outpatient’s Clinic is located in Gwyneth Huelin Wing, on floor R. You can also access the ward from the main hospital entrance and follow the link corridor to the lifts outside the new MRI scanning unit. There is lift and stair access at both locations.
