What is a temporary passport
A Jersey variant emergency travel document, also known as a temporary passport, is a non biometric, 8 page travel document. It’s issued by the Jersey Passport Office.
It’s for British citizens in Jersey who need to travel overseas and can’t wait for a full validity Jersey variant British passport.
A temporary passport:
- is non biometric
- is valid for up to 12 months, or for the specific trip only
- is for emergency travel only
Border authorities have been told that the Crown Dependencies and Gibraltar may issue this type of temporary passport for emergency travel.
The Passport Office doesn’t accept responsibility if your travel plans can’t go ahead because a country doesn’t accept a temporary passport.
For urgent travel
You must check whether your destination country accepts non biometric emergency passports.
Check emergency travel document rules by country on GOV.UK
For full entry requirements for the country you’re visiting, including visas, see foreign travel advice on GOV.UK.
When you can request a temporary passport
You may be eligible if all of the following apply:
- need to travel overseas for a genuine emergency, such as serious illness or a life threatening situation
- are travelling internationally, not just within the Common Travel Area (CTA)
- can provide evidence of pre paid travel
- cannot wait for a full validity Jersey variant British passport
- can explain why your full passport is not available (for example, it is lost, stolen, expired, expiring, unavailable, or with the Passport Office)
- can pay the correct fee
You must also submit a fully completed application for a full validity passport.
You need to provide documents that prove you meet these requirements. The Passport Office will assess these before approving a temporary passport.
Who is eligible for a temporary passport
A temporary passport can be issued in Jersey to:
- adult British citizens
- child British citizens
In most cases, eligibility is straightforward if the temporary passport replaces a previously issued full validity Jersey variant British passport.
Temporary passports are not normally issued to first time applicants.
In exceptional cases, a temporary passport may be approved. If so:
- a first time interview is required
- all supporting documents must be provided
The Passport Office may refuse an application if an applicant has a history of repeatedly losing passports.
How to apply
You need to email the Jersey Passport Office at passports@gov.je.
You must include full details of your situation so your eligibility can be assessed.
Make sure you have all required information before applying. If more information is needed, a passport officer will contact you. This may delay your application.
Cost
In most cases, you must apply for a full validity passport at the same time as a temporary passport.
The cost of the temporary passport and the full validity passport depend on the application type.
