​Get a passport urgently

You can apply for an emergency travel document if you need to travel and don’t have your passport.

What you need to do depends on where you are.

Not all countries accept them. To know if it'll be accepted in the country you’re travelling to check emergency travel document rules by country on GOV.UK.​

If you’re in Jersey

You can apply for a temporary passport for urgent travel. This is on a case-by-case basis.

If it’s approved, you could get it within 48 hours.

If you’re in the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man or Guernsey

You might be able to travel with a photo ID to prove your identity and nationality. 

You should also check the guidance from your airline or ferry company which may have different rules or documents they accept.

If you’re abroad

You can apply for an emergency travel document on GOV.UK if you’re abroad outside:

• the UK
  
• Ireland
• Isle of Man
  
• Guernsey

This might happen because your passport is lost, stolen or damaged.

Who can get a temporary passport

You can get a temporary passport if you're a British citizen (adult or child).

All of these must also apply:

• you need to travel for a genuine emergency, such as a serious or life‑threatening illness
• you’re travelling outside the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man or Guernsey
• you have proof of pre‑paid travel
• you can’t wait for a full passport
• you can explain why your passport is not available

Temporary passports are usually issued to replace an existing passport. We don’t normally issue them if you never had a passport.

How to apply

To apply for a temporary passport email passports@gov.je and include:

• full details of your situation
• your travel plans
• supporting documents

After we receive all your documents, we’ll review your application and let you know if it’s approved and next steps.

In exceptional cases, you’ll need to attend an interview.

We can refuse your application if you have repeatedly lost passports.

A passport officer will contact you if we need more information. This may delay your application.

What a temporary passport is

A temporary passport is an emergency travel document issued by the Jersey Passport Office. It’s also known as a Jersey variant emergency travel document.

A temporary passport:

• is non-biometric
• has 8 pages
• is valid for up to 12 months, or for a single trip
• is for emergency travel only

Temporary passport fees

You usually need to apply and pay for a temporary and regular passport at the same time.

Out of hours fees apply if your request is outside working hours, at the weekend or bank holiday.
