What is a temporary passport
A Jersey variant emergency travel document (also referred to as a temporary passport) is a non-biometric, 8-page travel document issued by the Jersey Passport Office.
It's designed for British citizens in Jersey who need to travel internationally urgently but cannot wait for a full-validity Jersey variant British passport. A temporary passport is issued with a restricted validity of up to 12 months, or purpose for intended trip only.
Border agencies have been advised that the Crown Dependencies (CDs) and Gibraltar will issue non-biometric temporary passports using this design for emergency travel purposes.
The Passport Office accepts no responsibility for travel booked by applicants that cannot be fulfilled due to non-acceptance of the temporary passport.
For urgent travel
Before applying check emergency travel document rules by country first to see if an non-biometric emergency passport can be accepted: Country lookup

When you can request a temporary passport
Your temporary passport application is eligible if you meet all of the following requirements:
- has to travel internationally (not just between Jersey and the UK or common travel area) for a genuine emergency (treatment of a serious illness or a life-or-death situation)
- can provide evidence of their pre-paid travel
- cannot wait for a full validity Jersey variant British passport to be issued
- can explain why their full validity passport is not available (for example, lost or stolen, expired, expiring, unavailable or submitted for renewal)
- is able to pay the appropriate fee
- a fully completed passport application for a full validity passport will need to be made
The applicant will be required to provide documentation at the time of application to demonstrate the above criteria before the temporary passport can be approved.
The applicant should email the Jersey Passport Office at passports@gov.je with full details of the situation so that the temporary passport eligibility can be assessed before a decision is made.
The applicant should be satisfied that they have all the required information before submitting their application to the Passport Office.
If we require additional information in support of your application, an Officer will contact you directly. This may delay your application.
Eligibility
A Temporary Passport can be issued in Jersey to:
- Adult British citizens
- Child British citizens
In most cases establishing eligibility will be straightforward if the temporary passport will replace a previously issued full validity Jersey variant British passport held by the applicant.
Temporary passports are not ordinarily issued to people applying for a passport for the first time. Where exceptional circumstances prevail and the issuing of a Temporary Passport is approved, a first time interview must take place and all relevant supporting information must be provided.
The Passport Office retains the right to refuse an application for a temporary passport in cases where it is established that an applicant has a track record of losing previous passports.

An application for a full validity passport will need to be made at the same time as a temporary passport, except in exceptional circumstances.
