Your appointment

Your appointment time is on your letter. Your procedure will not be carried out immediately on your admission but at some time during the morning or afternoon list.

Bring a list of the medication you are currently taking. Let us know in advance of any other conditions that we should be aware of, for example diabetes.

For your comfort, you may bring some slippers with you and something to read. When you arrive, let us know if you need a medical certificate.

What to expect on the day of admission

You need to arrive by 8am if you're on the morning list or 1pm if you have an afternoon appointment. The lists run all morning, and all afternoon. You can bring a book or electronic tablet as you may have a wait. Wifi is available on the ward.

A nurse admits you to the unit and takes your medical history. They explain the procedure and you can ask any last minute questions.

When we've admitted all patients, we decide the list order. The order is decided based on medical histories and procedures required, and not on a first come first served basis. We do our best to see everyone as quickly as possible.

Your results

After your procedure, we inform you of the results. We send a copy of the test report and any biopsy results to your GP, usually within 2 weeks.

If any follow up or further investigation is needed, we will arrange it for you. We will send any appointments information to you by post.

If you're having sedation for your procedure, you need someone to take you home, stay with you after the procedure and remain with you overnight.

Complications are very rare. Contact the Endoscopy Nurse by calling the hospital switchboard on +44 (0) 1534 442000 if you see signs of:

  • bleeding
  • develop pain
  • have a temperature

Alternatively, go straight to the Emergency Department at the hospital.

Opening hours

We operate as a day unit and our opening hours are Monday to Thursday, from 8am to 6.30pm and Friday, from 8am to 2pm. We are closed on weekends and public holidays.
