I am currently writing a dissertation on the impact of GST on SMEs in Jersey and would like the statistics concerning the number of GST registered businesses in Jersey and if available, what sectors these businesses belong to.

Response

As at the 31 March 2015 the number of live GST registrations was as follows:

Normal registrations: 1532
(i.e. Those exceeding £300,000 turnover in a 12 month period); 

Group Registrations: 153
(i.e. Lead entities for Companies under the same control/ownership, all of which are making taxable supplies)   

Voluntary: 192
(i.e. Entities which are trading below £300,000 turnover but have requested to be registered)       

Charities: 367
(i.e. Entities which are exempt from income tax by virtue of Article 115(a), (aa) and (ab) of the Income Tax (Jersey) Law,1961) 

The GST Law allows Charities to reclaim the GST they are charged but does not require them to charge GST on any supplies they make.

International Service Entities: 406
(i.e. Entities which meet the criteria of Article 60 of the Goods and Services Tax (Jersey) Law)        

International Service Entities are predominately Financial Services Companies whose client base/majority of customers are resident outside of Jersey.  For payment of a fee, they are excluded from the normal indirect tax requirements.
