Hundreds of international conventions and treaties have been ratified for Jersey and have huge implications on an everyday basis.

A

Is any department of the States tasked with disseminating information on these for civil society and the general public and if so what is the annual budget devoted specifically to this activity and where can the information be accessed?

B

Since most international conventions include an obligation on the government to disseminate such information widely, is the current expenditure and attention to this activity considered to be adequate?

Response

A

The Ministry of External Relations is coordinating a project in partnership with the Law Officers’ Department and the States Greffe to confirm which international agreements have been extended to Jersey. Information about 51 of those agreements is published on the Jersey Legal Information Board (JLIB) website and can be accessed at the following link:

Treaties and Conventions

This information includes the date on which the agreement came into force in Jersey and a link to the text of the agreement.

Another 70 international agreements have been identified as having been extended to the Island and are with the Law Officers’ Department for confirmation. Information in these will be published on the JLIB website in due course. The project is contained within the responsibilities of one senior full time employee therefore it is not possible to provide a budget figure as time spent on this is not recorded.

B

Increased focus is being given to this work, including the potential for additional resource.
